Now that cameras and smartphones have largely replaced the once-ubiquitous field notebook in the pockets of birders – for better or for worse – the field notebook runs the risk of becoming an anachronism. But it shouldn’t! There’s so much you can learn from a good field notebook, and that’s one of the reasons the Field Notebook module continues to be a popular one in our annual Young Birder of the Year Contest.
Noted birder, author, and raconteur Steve N.G. Howell has created an excellent 5 part series of posts at The Eyrie, the ABA’s young birder blog, on the ins and outs of building a great field notebook. But the information there is not just relevant to young birders, so please head over and check it out!
